So whats more stressful than your computer becoming infected with a horde of viruses only to be cleaned off so it could start randomly deleting files, including that 8 page research paper you wrote on "the beginning," and deleting sections of files, including a whole page of that 12 page exegtical due in three days which you only had 7 (oh wait scratch that, 6) done, refusing to connect to the internet, and having a battery life a fruit fly wouldn't envy? Buying a new computer.
And all of this at the end of the semester when I have 178 gazillion things due!
Oh well, life goes on.
This will be my last time typing a blog on this computer. Farewell, my old friend, I loath the material you're made out of. We had a good go. I'm glad it's over. 443mb of RAM, good-bye. Hello, 3GB!

Before throwing out the entire computer, have you tried reinstalling the operating system? Everything you described sounds like a software issue that might be fixed with a new OS installation.
Although you probably aren't interested in that much work if you've got a new laptop. But might I add that it is times like this that cause us to implement backup strategies. If you don't have one, get one now before it happens again.
I recommend an external hard drive that is at least as big as the drive in your laptop and a good backup program like Acronis True Image Home.
